Company History
While RiverWalk Resort is one of the newest "grand" resorts in New Hampshire, the vision for it and the land it sits on certainly have history. It was built on the land, first used for logging and the paper mill industry, which was a boon for New Hampshire until the early 20th century. When the mill closed in 1980, it would never return. Instead, the vision of one man, resort developer Dennis Ducharme, saw what the property’s next chapter would be.
The ruins of the old papermill sat, crumbling in the center of town for nearly 30 years - a decaying, dangerous relic of a previous era. The site was determined to be hazardous by the EPA and needed to be cleaned up for the health and safety of the community & surrounding environment.
As cited in an EPA report... "contamination left behind from the blighted former paper mill posed challenges to the town in developing the area. With buildings built in the early 1900s, the old paper mill was in terrible conditions and had dangerous environmental hazards. Contamination included asbestos containing building materials, such as roofing materials, wall panels shingles, caulking, adhesive materials. Lead-based paint was also an environmental concern."
The determination of Dennis to clean up the site eventually led to a partnership with the EPA, NH Department of Environmental Services & Grafton County Economic Development Council, securing the site for inclusion in the EPA's Brownfields Program, which helps put contaminated properties back into productive use. At a cleanup cost of nearly $1 million, this massive effort paved the way for the vision and development of RiverWalk Resort. Nearly 7 years after demolishing the old mill and clearing the site of hazardous contaminants, RiverWalk opened its doors to the public and a new chapter began to unfold. While many saw the building as a spectacular achievement on its own, this was only the first phase of the ultimate vision for this grand new resort. In 2022, construction began on the next, even more impressive chapter in this story, and the extraordinary transformation of this once crumbling property continues to be reshaped and reborn in all its grandeur.
